Should I measure rankings or calls?

The short answer

Calls. Rankings move around and look different for every person and every phone. Calls, texts, bookings and jobs won are what pay you, so track those first.

Why rankings can mislead you

Search results change with where the person is standing and what they searched before. Your “rank” is different for almost everyone.

AI answers add another layer. When an AI summary shows, clicks drop sharply — a randomized experiment by Agarwal & Sen found about 40% fewer. Being on top doesn’t always mean the phone rings.

And AI answers change each time you ask. So one AI result is never a promise. Look at the trend over months.

What to count every week

  • Calls — answered and missed.
  • Texts and website messages.
  • Quotes sent or bookings made.
  • Jobs won.
  • Where each new customer found you.

Ask one question

Ask every new customer: “How did you find us?” Write the answer down. After a month, you’ll see what works.

Where to find the numbers

Your Google Business Profile shows calls and website clicks from your profile. Your phone shows missed calls. A notebook or a simple spreadsheet does the rest.

What to ask anyone you pay

Ask to see calls, messages and jobs — not just rankings. If they can’t show you, ask why.

Do it yourself

  1. Make a simple sheet with five columns: week, calls, missed calls, messages, jobs won.
  2. Fill it in every Friday.
  3. Ask every new customer how they found you, and write it down.
  4. Once a month, check the calls and website clicks in your Google Business Profile.
  5. After three months, compare. Keep what brings jobs and drop what doesn’t.
